Transport & Logistics IWG in discussion with FTA negotiators

Last week, AustCham Shanghai members joined representatives from the Departments of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and Transport and Regional Services in Roundtable discussions on Free Trade Agreement developments in Transport & Logistics.
The discussions were mutually rewarding, as members received updates from the negotiators whilst also feeding back their concerns and experience relevant to their industry and the FTA.
Of the 10 main areas of negotiations in the Transport and Logistics sphere, licensing and registration of companies, warehousing, air transport, passenger ticketing, travel services, logistics and freight forwarding were hot topics.
In particular, the operation of trucking services within China and how this was regulated was reviewed at length.
The dialogue proved very productive, and we look forward to further developments from the 9th Round of FTA negotiations. The Government representatives have now moved on to Beijing to take part in these negotiations with their Chinese government counterparts.

Industry Focus: China Transport Mode trends moving forward
Joao Alves, Vice President - Logistics, Infrastructure & Construction, Capital Eight

"The major issue regarding transport modes in China has been and will continue to be railways. Currently, Chinese railways, the busiest and most congested in the world, prioritize passengers over cargo, rely heavily on single, non-electrified track and booking, handling and tracking are still sub-par.
However, in the long-term there are reasons to be optimistic - $240b investments until 2020 have been announced and, through privatization, the government is encouraging the participation of private and foreign companies, bringing in needed funding and expertise. A 75km privately funded railway being built in Guangdong and a JV between Deutsche Bahn and China Railways to create a container rail service are certainly welcomed moves in the industry."

AustCham Shanghai welcomes guest speaker Joao Alves, Vice President – Logistics, Infrastructure & Construction, Capital Eight to bring his perspectives to the upcoming Transport & Logistics Joint Chamber Workshop: Logistics Overview of China next Thursday 21 June.
